    "Ikutani SAN"

    Teaser from

    Performing Arts Festival 2018

The first piece of a long-term project Ikutani SAN(参) is a modern transmedia version of the first part of the ancient Japanese text Kojiki(古事記).
Often referred to the Japanese Genesis, this text tells about the founder myths of Japan, the first gods as well as the history of the first emperor.
Our dancer Ichi Go will revive three important Gods: Susanoo, Amaterasu, and Ama no Uzume.
We chose this particular part because it leads to the birth of the sacral dance: Kagura, performed for the first time in front of thousands of gods (kami), by the Goddess Ama no Uzume in order to restore light on the Earth.
This symbolical unity, between people, arts and culture is the very essence of our Elektro Kagura.
    Stage Design: Yukihiro Ikutani
    Dance & Choreography: Ichi Go

My philosophy is based on the teaching I received from my great teacher Mieko Fuji, president of the dance therapy association and of the modern dance association in Tokyo. The book “The Flowering Spirits(風姿花伝)” by Zeami, founder of the Noh theatre, had a profound impact on my views and goals.
As a matter of fact, the position of the educator, the capacity to share with others, is essential, just like the artists personality.
Dance is a channel that goes over boundaries and creates new connections. For me, the dancer is a bridge, supporting comings and goings between a piece of art and its audience, between the artwork and the performers.

The dancer needs to keep in mind to remain a clean, bright mirror, capable of reflecting all sorts of roles. This way of thinking, I learned it from the Kagura dance, a very old and still vivid tradition in Kamakura, my hometown,

and in the mystical region of Miyazaki.

After 6 years in Berlin, I managed to define a clear path for my own dance: a project that has its roots in the millennial dance of Kagura(神楽) and that is nourished by the influence of the contemporary dance and the modern art scene.
With some fellow artists in Berlin, we started a company based on this vision 3 years ago: Elektro Kagura(電気神楽).

The visual part is directed by Yukihiro Ikutani, a painter and stage designer incorporating the influence of Japanese subculture such as Manga, Anime, games…
And the electronic soundscape is created by the French composer Cédric Douhaire, who studied Japanese civilization and literature. He is also taking part of the performances, acting as a Japanese story teller.
The three artists are currently based in Berlin..
